Sandra Ghobrial
Why did you decide to join MUNSS?
I decided to join MUNSS in my role because I truly felt that with COVID, MUNSS had not been serving its purpose to its fullest potential. With students, I know we were all so burnt out with online schooling and I really wanted to bring back that in-person fun and educational experience! Being on MUNSS for 3 years now, my passion has been growing for it every year and especially this year with our amazing executive team of nursing students. They astonish me every. single. day.
What are your goals this year as a nursing student?
My goal this year as a nursing student is to graduate and start off in the Emergency Department. I have just wrapped up my Pediatric Emergency placement and I loved it:)
What is one thing on your bucket list?
One thing on my bucket list is swimming with dolphins because they’re my favourite animals. Fun fact: they’re the smartest mammals and can actually use one hemisphere of their brain at a time!
Callista Liu
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
The best piece of advice I have would be to not hesitate when getting involved and exploring new opportunities! I met Sandra, the President, when she asked me to support her nomination as the L1 Rep, but I was too afraid to run in an election back then. Joining MUNSS has definitely been one of the highlights of my university life ever since!
What is one thing on your bucket list?
I would love to do balloon twisting and make fun shapes! It is quite an underrated art in my opinion, and I am seriously considering pursuing this as a hobby. P.S. That is why I have a balloon dog painted on my Yellowsuit.
What is your biggest life hack?
My biggest hack is to set alarms on my phone to remind me of tasks that might be easy to forget but quick to do (e.g., paying rent, bringing an umbrella). I also used to ignore emails and messages until I had to respond to them, but living by the “if it takes less than 2 minutes, do it now” rule has been a game changer!

Since my first year I had always wanted to get involved in nursing clubs but never knew how. By joining munss, I’d hoped to get more involved in nursing activities throughout the year and help plan fun events for the students to give us a much needed break. It’s also been a great way to meet more nursing students and faculty through munss events and meetings!
Where is your favourite place to study on campus?

What are your goals this year as a nursing student?
My goal this year is to master a routine for getting through 12 hour shifts without getting addicted to coffee. Long hours are difficult, but doing things like getting ~7-8 hours of sleep, having a healthy lunch packed, drinking a lot of fluids throughout the day helps get me through the shift.

Which electives would you recommend for your fellow nursing students?
One of my all time favourite electives to take was Psych Personality (course code 2B03). It continued on with a lot of the content found in the mandatory nursing psych courses we take and was also a fun way to look at many popular personality tests like the MBTI in an analytical lens.

If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
My first-year advice is to email your professors about your concerns as soon as they come up. Professors are happy to go over your exams and papers with you and point out ways to improve, but they can’t help you unless you ask.

What are your goals this year as a nursing student?
One of my goals this year as a nursing student is to be able to give back, as much as I can, to the lovely nursing community at McMaster. These past three years have been some of the best years of my life because of the McMaster Nursing community, so I just want to be able to make my last year as memorable and meaningful as possible and hopefully represent the graduating class proudly as one of this year’s Level 4 reps! 🙂
Michelle Baldwin
Why did you join MUNSS?
I joined MUNSS so that I could get more involved in the nursing community before I graduate! Since my first year I wanted to be a part of MUNSS but I was always too shy to join, so I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity now in my final year at Mac. I am really excited to be collaborating with so many amazing students and am looking forward to showing everyone what we have been working on!
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself to keep up with academics, but also to seek new opportunities outside of school! Now looking back I wish that I had taken the time to explore McMaster and the greater community instead of focusing solely on academics. For example, keeping up with my hobbies, practicing self care, or joining a new club. Also, I would tell myself to not to compare myself to other students – everyone has their own unique path in nursing and it is so easy to feel as if you are not working hard enough. Don’t worry – you got this!
What is one thing on your bucket list?
I think that one thing on my bucket list is to live in a different country for a year! I would love to live somewhere like Australia or the UK to either to work or pursue a master’s degree and truly immerse myself in that experience.
Hayley Giroux
Why did you join MUNSS?
I really wanted to be more involved in my schooling than just attending classes and doing assignments. I also knew that I wanted to be able to represent the Conestoga site students in a way that would be helpful, especially for our graduation and pinning ceremony.
What are your goals this year as a nursing student?
Now that I am in my last semester, my goal has been to try and be in the moment more with my education. These years went by so quickly, and I would like to be more present with the last weeks I have here in my undergrad.
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
Breathe. You know more than you think you do, you are more capable than you think you are, and everything is going to fall into place.
Abigail Ankomah
Why did you join MUNSS?

May Huang
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
If I could go back to first year, I would tell myself to live in the moment and enjoy first year more. I was always so worried about upcoming assessments that I didn’t have the chance to step back and fully appreciate my first year until it ended. First year goes by so quickly and I wish I could go back and make more memories rather than being cooped up in my room all the time.
Which electives would you recommend for your fellow nursing students?
I took CLASSICS 2MT3 over the summer and I found it rather interesting! It’s a great way to learn the structure of medical terminology to incorporate into your future nursing practice. The course’s workload was very manageable and the content will be useful for your science-based courses and clinicals. I would definitely recommend taking this course!

What is your biggest life hack?
My biggest life hack is WHITEBOARDS. They’re how I study. Anyone that knows me knows I live for whiteboards.
Alicia Leung
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
I would say go and make intentional time with your friends. Nursing school is so busy and its so easy to get caught up in all the readings and studying but you have limited time to hangout with your friends too. So combine the two and study with friends. Also, make sure you keep a running list of assignments and tasks to do throughout the week
Where is your favourite place to study on campus?
Mills Commons is a great meeting spot, maybe not the best studying spot per say. Me and my other friends always hang out there around a big table and its really easy to get food from MUSC too.
Which electives would you recommend for your fellow nursing students?
I would say just take the courses that interest you! You have such limited elective spaces so I would recommend taking something you actually enjoy. Music therapy is a really cool course and very interesting to see it in practice.
Chloe Gammad
Hannah Lirio
Why did you join MUNSS?
Being a part of MUNSS gave me a reason to give back to the tight-knit nursing community that has shaped my experience as a student for the past few years! I’ve always wanted to become involved with/oversee our program in one way or another – working with my fellow peers as catalysts for continuous change and improvement on behalf of the nursing student body is a longstanding passion of mine. I admire that MUNSS is able to support nursing student connections and advocacy during our time at McMaster University.
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give yourself?
Nursing is rigorous. There are lots of heightened expectations, so learning how to set personal boundaries and not overexert yourself in various aspects is key to success in university. The saying goes that it’s much easier said than done, but finding a balance to maintain physical, mental and emotional wellbeing will truly prevent early burnout. Take a day off from studying every once in a while and care for yourself as you see fit! You may be a nurse in training, but you also have the rest of your professional career to learn new things + keep yourself busy 🙂
What are your goals this year as a nursing student?
This year, I’m keen on exploring my areas of interest as an extern outside of school. Currently, I’m in love with my postpartum/L&D/NICU/peds rotation for placement and have a growing appreciation for working with an entirely different patient population. A goal I’m currently working towards for the long-term is aiming to volunteer as a community event responder. I’m always searching for ways to fine-tune my leadership, teamwork, and put my nursing skills to the test, so I have long list of broad goals I hope to achieve.
Melanie MacFarlane

Harpreet Prada
If you could go back to first year, what advice would you give back to yourself?
If I could go back to first year, the one piece of advice I’d give myself is to take everything one day at a time. Nursing school can get overwhelming very quick and it can feel like you’re drowning if you let it get to you. So I definitely needed to hear that I don’t need to get everything done today and to finish one task at a time. This would’ve helped my brain not run a thousand miles an hour!:)
What is your dream destination to travel to?
My dream destination to travel to one day would be Switzerland (especially in the Winter).
What is one thing on your bucket list?
One thing that is on my bucket list (that I will check off one day) is definitely skydiving! Or any adrenaline-pumping activity for that matter.
Hebert Viana

My dream is to make a Euro trip, visiting as many countries as possible in a course of 30 days
